4 Tips for Setting Financial Planning Goals in the New Year

As seniors age, many are doing their best to maintain healthy habits while building on the nest egg they already have. If you are like many other seniors, you take the new year to determine what has worked and what hasn’t worked and outline a new financial planning goal you’d like to achieve. When doing this, it’s important to keep your future lifestyle in mind. Do you want to enjoy traveling, enjoy a lifestyle full of new opportunities or experience total peace of mind knowing that your assets are secure with a plan for the future? Setting a good financial planning goal can help you to achieve the lifestyle you want while securing the future you’ve worked so hard for and deserve.

“Many seniors know that they need to set a financial goal to ensure their lifestyle is maintained or is even greater than it is now,” says Jeanie Tini, Director of Marketing and Sales at The Estates at Carpenters, a Life Plan Community in Lakeland, Florida, “but sometimes they may be unsure of where to start. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources available to help you set your goals, keep them, and secure the life you want to enjoy. Our website even offers a Financial Calculator to help with planning and understanding the costs of retirement.”

Goals This New Year That Could Change Your Finances

Whether you need some help to get you going or want to make sure you have your “t’s” crossed and your “i’s” dotted, we can help! Consider some of the following tips from The Balance for setting financial planning goals that will work for you!

  • Write down each penny you spend. Assess your spending habits and consider where your money is being spent. Are you spending a lot of money going out to eat? Are you making a lot of impulse purchases? If you aren’t sure where your money is going, or you want to get a better handle on your spending this new year, write down each time you spend money. If you see your habits, you may be able to pinpoint where you could make some savings.
  • Create a monthly spending plan and stick to it. After assessing your spending, consider creating a monthly budget. Allot a certain amount of money to dining out and entertainment with friends, budget out your bills, and save the rest. Either put this in an emergency fund, place it in savings or put it back for future healthcare expenses.
  • Cut your spending and don’t add additional debt. By taking ownership of your spending habits and creating a budget, you may find that there are certain expenses you can cut. Do you only watch a few television channels? See if they are available on a streaming service, as this can often be cheaper than cable. Do you purchase a lot of books? Consider going to the library instead. If you’re spending too much money on entertainment, see what free things are happening around the community. Keep in mind that taking on additional debt can greatly impact your ability to save, so try to avoid this if possible.
  • Create a more long-term financial plan. If you resolve to keep your money and assets secure, consider what your future goals are. At a Life Plan Community like The Estates at Carpenters, your future is more secure. With our Lifecare contract, you never need to worry about the rising cost of health care, as you can receive assisted living or skilled nursing services at the same monthly rate you pay for independent living. It’s a plan that can save you thousands on future healthcare costs!
